Hey, I’m Logan!
I’m an Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist, a.k.a. someone who specializes in the upper extremity. I also am a husband, dad, coffee lover, baseball fan (Go Tigers!), and novice juggler.
Welcome to my blog!
So this is something that I have wanted to do for some time. I am OBSESSED with anatomy. In OT school, everyone called me “Professor Logan.” For fun I study/draw out the brachial plexus and watch hand surgery videos. Yeah, I know. But it is my passion. I became a hand therapist/upper extremity specialist because of my love for anatomy. When I was in undergrad, I had just switched my major to exercise science and was taking anatomy and physiology and I remember falling in love with the anatomy of the upper extremity. I was also taking an intro to exercise science class where professionals would come speak to us so we could see what a degree in exercise science could get us. At the time, I thought I maybe wanted to go into PT or athletic training. I remember I was sick the day that the PT came to talk to class. The next class, an OT who was a hand therapist came and talked to our class and I was intrigued. I talked with my advisor after that class and decided that hand therapy is the career I wanted to pursue. That was in 2011/2012. I am now living that dream and am so grateful for my career.
During the the last nearly 5 years of treating, one thing I realized is that a lot of my patients had a lack of understanding on how their upper extremity functioned. Part of our job as therapists (PT or OT) is to educate the patient, and it is by far one of my favorite parts. I love seeing the light bulb moment when the patient finally understands what is going on or why they hurt or how to prevent it from worsening. I one day would love to teach anatomy of the upper extremity at a university. But I also thought I could share my love for the upper extremity with all of you on here.
So welcome to Teach Me Hand Therapy. This is a space where I will talk about general anatomy of the upper extremity, tips and tricks in hand therapy, various conditions seen in hand therapy, orthotics, various surgeries, and more. Really I haven’t even thought of all the things I may use this space for, and I think that’s a fun part about it! We can watch this space grow, together.
